Goondas Act Slapped on Accused In Pollachi Sexual Abuse Case

The case has been handed over to the CB-CID wing of Tamil Nadu police
and bail denied to the key accused

The draconian Goondas Act has been slapped on all four accused in the Pollachi sexual abuse case. The police had, on Monday, March 11 sent a proposal to the Coimbatore District Collector to add sections under the Goondas Act to charge the four accused. The Collector processed the proposal and gave approval for the same on Tuesday, March 12
morning.

Later in the afternoon, Tamil Nadu DGP TK Rajendran handed over the case to the CB-CID as public outcry grew.

Bail has been denied to key accused Thirunavukkarasu by the Judicial Magistrate 1 Pollachi Court. Thirunavukkarasu’s mother had filed a bail petition for her son.

“Thirunavukkarasu was absconding for about 10 days after the police FIR was lodged,” said advocate Meeran Moideen. “Also two of his mobile phones have been sent for analysis. Bail has been denied pending the
analysis of the phones.”

Lawyers surrounded Thirunavukkarasu’s mother at the Pollachi court compound today as she cried, accusing the police of foisting false cases on her son. A war of words broke out as the visibly upset mother insisted that her son was innocent, while lawyers surrounded her and challenged her claims.

Protests Abound Across Tamil Nadu

Protests have broken out amongst college students in various parts of Tamil Nadu. Coimbatore Law College students boycotted classes and protested outside the college, demanding that the courts should take up the Pollachi sexual abuse case suo motu and ensure that all the real culprits are brought to book.

At Tiruvarur district, Rajagopalswamy Government Arts College students in Mannargudi sat on protests similarly. They demanded that the real culprits behind the Pollachi sexual abuse case be apprehended by the police.

Permission to hold a protest meeting in Pollachi led by Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi has been denied to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The Coimbatore district administration denied permission citing law and order problems.

Speaking to the media in Chennai, Kanimozhi said – “The protest will take place whether the district administration gives permission or not. It is clear that someone is being shielded in this incident.”

Makkal Needhi Maiam leader and actor Kamal Hassan filed a complaint with the DGP demanding that all accused in the Pollachi sexual abuse case be given proper punishment.

“The DGP requested that this issue not be politicised,” said Hassan.“He has said that the police department will do everything to bring the criminals to justice. When I told him there are a number of views regarding the involvement of political parties in this case, he told me that this will also be investigated. There are a number of people on social media who are advocating violence against the accused. The law is for everyone and it is not correct to incite violence,” he said.
